The Plum books have an interesting cast of character including the tall, dark and mysterious Ranger who owns a security firm called RangeMan. He'd love to do the horizontal mambo with Stephanie but she has another man on her mind. Joe Morelli is a local detective and Stephanie's on again/off again. They both have commitment issues. Stephanie's partner in bounty hunting is Lula a plus-sized black woman and former 'ho.
The Plum family is half Italian and half Hungarian and full of character. I only hope that I have half the spunk of Grandma Mazur when I'm 80. Mrs. Plum wishes Stephanie would get a job at the button factory. She has a special cupboard in the kitchen that contains a little something to calm her nerves. Stephanie's exploits often get violent and messy so Mrs. Plum is never far from her cupboard.
In Lean Mean Thirteen, Stephanie's ex-husband Dick Orr is missing. When the police find blood and drag marks in his house, Stephanie is an obvious suspect. Especially since she tried to strangle him the day before. Clearing her name pushes Stephanie to try and find Orr. Along the way she finds out a lot of interesting things including the fact that Orr never changed his will and she is still the sole beneficiary of what could be a large fortune.
All of Stephanie's adventures are amusing and you'll want to keep reading just to find out what else can go wrong. Her life is strange. That's a fact not lost on those around her, including Lula:
"I swear you're a crazy person. You go around up to your eyeballs in snakes and dead people and exploding beavers. Even when I was a 'ho my life wasn't that freaky. Only thing normal about you is your boyfriend, and you don't know what the heck to do with him. To make matters worse, you that spook Ranger sniffing after you. Not that anyone wouldn't want him sniffing after them. I mean, he's finer than fine. But he's not normal.
Yes, that's right exploding beavers. You'll laugh and you'll shake your head but it's worth it to spend some time in Trenton with Stephanie and her friends.
